The UAE Ministry of Economy and Tourism has further streamlined its trademark procedures by removing the requirement to submit a copy of the trademark registration certificate, or the latest renewal certificate, when filing various post-registration requests through its updated electronic system.
The change applies to several commonly filed trademark transactions, including trademark renewals; assignments and transfers of ownership; recordal of trademark licence agreements; changes to the trademark owner’s name or address; and recordal of mergers and other changes affecting the registered owner.
Under the updated procedures, applicants are no longer required to provide registration documents that are already available in the Ministry’s electronic trademark records. The system allows the competent department to retrieve and verify the relevant registration information directly from its database.
Trademark owners must still provide the supporting documents required for the specific transaction. For example, an assignment recordal requires an appropriately executed transfer agreement, while a licence recordal requires the relevant licence agreement. Applications filed through a trademark agent also remain subject to the applicable Power of Attorney requirements.
The development reflects the UAE’s continuing efforts to digitalise its intellectual property services and reduce unnecessary administrative requirements for local and international rights holders.
As some older service pages or system interfaces may continue to display previous documentary requirements during the transition, applicants should confirm the current requirements applicable to each transaction before filing.
