The Omani Trademark Office has issued updated guidance concerning trademark renewals scheduled for 2026, introducing procedural changes that may require certain trademark owners to amend their existing registrations in order to maintain proper protection. The update relates primarily to changes in the Nice Classification system, which governs the international classification of goods and services for trademark registrations.
Under the 13th Edition of the Nice Classification (NCL), several goods that were previously classified under Class 9 have been reassigned or removed from that class. While Oman’s electronic trademark system is still currently operating under the 11th Edition (2019 version), the Omani Trademark Office has indicated that applicants renewing their trademarks from 2026 onward may need to review their specifications to ensure compliance with the updated classification framework.
As a result, trademark owners whose registrations contain goods that are no longer recognized under the updated classification may be required to file amendment applications.
These amendments may involve removing or adjusting certain goods listed in the existing registration, particularly where such goods are no longer properly classified within the original class.
In some cases, trademark owners may need to file new trademark applications to cover goods that have been reassigned to different classes under the newer Nice Classification edition. This step may be necessary to ensure that protection for those products continues without interruption.
According to an official notice issued by the Omani National Intellectual Property Office on 18 February 2026, the Ministry is currently in the process of transitioning its trademark system to align with the 13th Edition of the Nice Classification. However, the electronic filing platform has not yet been fully updated, and it continues to operate under the earlier classification structure. This temporary discrepancy may require applicants and trademark owners to carefully review their goods and services during renewal procedures.
Trademark owners with registrations due for renewal in 2026 and beyond are advised to review their trademark specifications in advance to avoid complications during the renewal process.
